Preserving The Artifacts

At the Kamloops Museum and Archives, we are dedicated to preserving historical artifacts, ranging from everyday items of the past to delicate and fragile objects. These artifacts, made of cloth, wood, metal, and other materials, are often in their original condition and require special care. For this reason, visitors must refrain from touching or handling any artifacts.

Our museum staff handles these items with gloves and employs specific techniques to ensure their preservation. Most artifacts can only be lightly dusted or cleaned with water, as using chemicals or vigorous cleaning methods can cause damage. We have meticulously designed our displays to provide you with an optimal view of these artifacts and the context in which they were used, so there is no need to touch them to appreciate their historical significance.

Why No Touching?

Touching artifacts can cause significant damage over time. The oils from our fingers can corrode metals, stain fabrics, and erode wood. Additionally, touching multiple objects can lead to cross-contamination. Many of our artifacts retain a historical patina, which often tells its own story. This patina is delicate, and any unnecessary handling can disturb or damage it.

Unlike modern items, these artifacts cannot be sanitized using chemicals, as this would harm their integrity. We focus on conserving artifacts, not restoring them, to maintain their authenticity and historical value.

Except ...

Touching of items is VERY encouraged in the Children’s Museum.
